About Trem Maria Fumaça São João del-Rei–Tiradentes

The Maria Fumaça train links São João del-Rei to Tiradentes on a narrow-gauge line, with 76 centimeters between the rails, pulled by a steam locomotive. It covers 12 kilometers between the two historic towns, on one of the most popular outings in the Campo das Vertentes region.

The line belonged to the old Estrada de Ferro Oeste de Minas (railway), opened in 1881 in the presence of Emperor Pedro II. The locomotives and wooden cars are old and follow the same 19th-century route.

Along the way, the train follows the Rio das Mortes (river), crosses rural areas and iron bridges and has views of the Serra de São José. You can ride one way or round trip, starting from either station.

In São João del-Rei, boarding is at the downtown railway station, which also houses the Museu Ferroviário (Railway Museum), with locomotives and old objects. It is worth arriving early and visiting the museum before departure.

The ride is relaxed, with no physical effort, and appeals to all ages.
