About Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo is the church of the Third Order of Carmel, in the historic center of São João del-Rei. Built in the 18th century, during the Rococo period, it is one of the best-known colonial churches in town and is protected by Iphan (Brazil's national heritage institute), both the building and its collection.

Outside, the highlight is the facade: the doorway is decorated with stone sculptures, and the two octagonal towers are set slightly back from the body of the church. It closes off the view down streets of old houses, which makes it one of the town's postcard images.

Inside, the woodcarving is very elaborate, but without the gilding common in the colonial churches of Minas Gerais, which keeps the interior bright. The chancel and the pulpits are attributed to the carver Manuel Rodrigues Coelho. In the nave is an unfinished statue of the dead Christ, without arms, which catches visitors' attention.

The visit is relaxed and suits all ages. The church is a few steps from the Museu Regional and the banks of the Córrego do Lenheiro, and pairs well with a walk around the other churches of the center.
