About Teatro Municipal (Casa da Ópera)

The Teatro Municipal de Sabará, also called Casa da Ópera (Opera House), is in the town's historic center, on Rua Dom Pedro II. It is considered the second-oldest theater in Brazil still in operation and is among the so-called Seven Wonders of the Estrada Real.

The theater's history begins in the 18th century, at the height of the gold rush in Minas. The current building opened on June 2, 1819, at a celebration for the birth of Princess Maria da Glória. It was visited by Emperor Pedro I and Emperor Pedro II. In the 20th century it even operated as a movie theater, fell into decline and was later restored. The historic ensemble of Sabará is protected by Iphan (Brazil's national heritage institute).

Outside, the facade is simple, in the style of the colonial mansions on the street. The surprise is inside: the horseshoe-shaped auditorium is surrounded by three levels of wooden boxes and galleries that rise almost to the ceiling. The theater is known for its good acoustics.

The space is still in use, with performances, concerts and cultural events. On days without shows, you can go in and see the hall. It is a quick, easy stop on a walking tour of the historic center, good for those who enjoy history, music and architecture.
