About Mina da Passagem
The Mina da Passagem is an old gold mine in the district of Passagem de Mariana, halfway between Mariana and Ouro Preto. It is one of the largest gold mines open to visitors in the world.
Gold was mined there from the 18th to the 20th century. It is estimated that more than 35 tons of gold came out of its galleries. After mining stopped, the mine was opened to tourism.
The visit begins with a descent in an old mining cart, which runs down the tracks into the mountain to a depth of about 120 meters. Down below, the guide leads the group through galleries and tunnels dug by the miners. The highlight is an underground lake of crystal-clear water, formed when the deepest tunnels filled with water.
The lake also welcomes certified divers, who explore the flooded galleries with specialized companies. For regular visitors, the tour is always guided.
