About Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição
The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição is the oldest church in downtown Congonhas and the town's main parish church. It is in the lower part of town, far from the Morro do Maranhão (hill) where the Santuário do Bom Jesus stands, and that is why many people who come to see the Prophets leave without visiting it.
It was built in the first half of the 18th century and became a parish in 1749. Over the decades it received additions by several artists, which is why it mixes different phases of the Minas Gerais Baroque. It has been protected by Iphan (Brazil's national heritage institute) since 1950.
Outside, the facade is simple, with two towers and a wide stone staircase in front. The highlight is the soapstone doorway, attributed to Aleijadinho, with angels, scrolls and a medallion depicting Noah's Ark.
Inside, the nave is one of the most spacious in Minas Gerais, with carved and gilded altars and twisted columns. It is a short, relaxed visit, good for those who enjoy sacred art and want to see a side of Congonhas beyond the Sanctuary. The front staircase can be an obstacle for people with reduced mobility.
