About Mirante da Janela

The Mirante da Janela (Window Viewpoint) is a rock formation near the village of São Jorge, in Chapada dos Veadeiros, in Alto Paraíso de Goiás. Stone blocks leaning against each other form an opening that frames, like a window, the two falls of the Rio Preto and the canyon the river runs through, already inside the National Park.

The formation was created by a rockfall, and the blocks look like toppling dominoes. Because of the risk of collapse, climbing on top of the rock is prohibited. Near the window there's another lookout, without the frame, with a wide panorama of the Chapada.

The trail is on private property next to the Park, and admission is paid at the house at the start of the trail. It's considered one of the toughest trails in the region: it goes up and down the whole way, with rocky terrain, wooden stairs and handrails on some stretches.

Halfway along is the Cachoeira do Abismo, which only has real water in the rainy season. It's an outing for people in good shape who are ready to hike under strong sun.

Practical information

How much time to set aside

Plan on about half a day for the round trip at an easy pace, including the detour to the Cachoeira do Abismo in the rainy season.

Best time

In the morning, with good light on the falls and less heat on the climb. In the rainy season, from November to March, the Cachoeira do Abismo fills with water; in the dry season, it's practically dry.

How to get there

The trailhead is about 3 km from the village of São Jorge, on a dirt road, and about 42 km from Alto Paraíso de Goiás. Drive to the property's parking lot, where you pay admission, and continue on foot.

Tip

There's nowhere to get water along the way: bring at least a liter and a half per person, sunscreen and a snack. If you've never hiked in the Chapada, go with a guide, because it's easy to get lost on some stretches.
