About Morro do Pai Inácio

Morro do Pai Inácio is the best-known viewpoint in Chapada Diamantina. It is in Palmeiras, beside the BR-242, and has the flat top typical of the region's hills, at about 1,100 meters above sea level. It is a mesa: what is left of a plateau that erosion wore away around it. Since 2015 it has been protected by Parque Natural Municipal do Pai Inácio, run by the Palmeiras city government and separate from the national park.

The name comes from a legend. Inácio, an enslaved man, is said to have become involved with the wife of the farm's owner. Pursued, he climbed the hill and, cornered at the edge, jumped holding an umbrella. Versions differ on how it ends: in some he lands on a rock ledge and escapes, in others he vanishes forever. The hill took his name.

The climb is on a short trail, 20 to 25 minutes, easy to moderate, with rocky stretches. At the top, the view opens in every direction: Morro do Camelo right next to it, other flat-topped hills, green valleys and layered ridges to the horizon.

Late afternoon is the most popular time, and the park lets you stay at the top until the sun sets. There is no restaurant on site, and speakers, musical instruments and alcoholic drinks are prohibited. There is an entrance fee, with tickets sold online, and free or half-price entry for some groups, such as residents and seniors, with ID.
