About Gruta da Torrinha

Gruta da Torrinha (cave) is in the village of the same name, in the countryside of Iraquara, in Chapada Diamantina. It is famous for its variety of mineral formations and is often named one of the most decorated caves in Brazil.

The cave has been known since the 19th century, but mapping of its galleries only began in 1992, with French cavers. Today much of it is still reserved for research, and visitors explore selected stretches with a guide.

The big draw is the rare formations: aragonite flowers, including one of the largest known in the world, helictites that grow in twisted directions, gypsum needles and calcite straws, as well as stalactites and stalagmites. There are also small lakes inside.

There are three tour routes, from the shortest, about an hour, to the full one, which takes more than two hours. All are guided, with a helmet and flashlight. There are low passages and uneven ground, so the visit takes some fitness and is not suitable for people with reduced mobility.
