About Gruta da Lapa Doce

Gruta da Lapa Doce is one of the most visited caves in Iraquara, in Chapada Diamantina. It is part of a large system of limestone galleries, one of the most extensive in Brazil, but only a stretch of about 850 meters is open to visitors.

The tour starts outside, with a short trail through the vegetation to the edge of a large sinkhole, a hole opened in the ground when the cave ceiling collapsed. From there you go down to the mouth of the cave, a huge entrance where daylight still reaches the first formations.

Inside, the chambers are vast and much of the path is in the dark. The group walks with flashlights and sees stalactites, stalagmites, columns and stone curtains formed over millions of years up close.

The visit is always led by the cave's own guides. The walk is easy for people with basic fitness, but the way back includes a steep climb out of the sinkhole. It is not suitable for people with limited mobility.
