About Parque Estadual da Serra de Caldas Novas
The Parque Estadual da Serra de Caldas Novas, known by its acronym PESCaN, protects the range of hills between Caldas Novas and Rio Quente, in southern Goiás. It was created in 1970 precisely to protect this area. The hills are an important recharge zone for the aquifers that feed the region's thermal waters.
Coming from the water parks, you find a different pace: preserved Cerrado, silence and short trails. The most popular paths lead to the Cascatinha and Paredão waterfalls, with cold water, and there are viewpoints overlooking the towns below. Other spots are the Cachoeira da Confusão (waterfall), the rock canyon called Rua de Pedra and the Pedra do Amor (rock).
The main trails are considered easy, with stairs and handrails on steep stretches. Some waterfalls shrink a lot or dry up at the height of the dry season. At the headquarters there is a visitor center, restrooms and parking.
The park is managed by the Goiás State Environment Department (Semad). It is a half-day outing, good for families and for anyone who enjoys walking and birdwatching, including the red-legged seriema, the park's symbol.
