About Ponte Velha

The Ponte Velha (old bridge) is the old arched bridge over the Miranda River that links Jardim to Guia Lopes da Laguna. The river marks the border between the two municipalities, and the bridge is near the point where the Santo Antônio River flows into the Miranda.

It was built in the 1930s, when the road linking Aquidauana to the south of the state, toward Bela Vista and Porto Murtinho on the border with Paraguay, was being opened. Locals say the bridge helped give rise to the two towns, which grew up on either side of the river.

Today it is a historic landmark and a spot for looking at the Miranda River. Many people stop on the bridge to watch the water flow, photograph the riverside forest and follow the river's rise and fall. Longtime residents remember jumping off it to swim when they were children.

The visit is quick and can fit into a tour of downtown Jardim or on the way to the region's nature attractions. The bridge carries vehicle traffic, so take care when crossing and when stopping for photos.
