About Cemitério dos Heróis

The Cemitério dos Heróis (Heroes' Cemetery) is a historic site in Jardim linked to the Paraguayan War. It stands on the banks of the Miranda River, outside the urban area, and marks the place where three figures of the Retreat of Laguna were buried: Colonel Carlos de Morais Camisão, Lieutenant Colonel Juvêncio Cabral de Menezes and José Francisco Lopes, known as Guia Lopes.

The Retreat of Laguna was the return march of a Brazilian Army column that had entered Paraguayan territory in 1867. Pursued by the enemy and struck by cholera and hunger, the troops lost many men along the way. Camisão and Juvêncio died on May 29, 1867, near the Miranda River, and Guia Lopes also died during the retreat. The episode became known through the account of the Viscount of Taunay, who took part in the march.

Later, the remains of the three men were taken to Rio de Janeiro, where they lie in the monument to the heroes of Laguna and Dourados, at Praia Vermelha. The site in Jardim remains a place of memory, with crosses lined up on the lawn, a central path and monuments. It is maintained by the city and the Army, which holds civic ceremonies there.

The visit is short and quiet, on flat, open ground surrounded by forest. It appeals to history lovers and to anyone who wants to understand why so many names in the region, such as neighboring Guia Lopes da Laguna, recall the Paraguayan War.
