About Pinheiro Multissecular
The Pinheiro Multissecular (centuries-old pine) is a giant araucaria (Araucaria angustifolia) growing in Linha Imperial, a rural community of Nova Petrópolis, in Serra Gaúcha. According to the city government, it's the second largest araucaria in Rio Grande do Sul by trunk measurement, at just over 2 meters in diameter.
The tree stands on private property, the Sítio Dona Amália, on Rua Josef Grings, and has welcomed visitors since 1998. On August 25, 2023, with the owner's agreement, it was listed as a municipal natural heritage site, which protects the pine and the area around it.
A short trail, on foot, leads to the base of the tree. There, what impresses you is the thickness of the trunk and the height of the crown. Groups often try to hug the trunk holding hands to see how many people it takes.
It's a quick, relaxed outing, good for families with kids and nature lovers. It pairs well with a stop at Praça Padre Theodor Amstad, nearby in the same community.
