About Morro do Calvário

Morro do Calvário is a viewpoint and place of faith in the São Paulo neighborhood of Carlos Barbosa, in Serra Gaúcha. At the top stands the Igreja Nossa Senhora das Dores, next to a large cross.

The path to the top is marked by the Stations of the Cross, which follow the climb. Every year, on Good Friday, the hill hosts the final scenes of the Passion of Christ reenactment. The procession leaves the Igreja Matriz, in the center, and covers about 3 km to the Calvário, in a reenactment performed by community volunteers.

The rest of the year, the place is quiet. From the top there's a wide view of the town and the green hills around it, and there are benches on the lawn to sit and take in the scenery.

The climb is a steep slope and takes some stamina. It's worth it whether you're looking for a moment of prayer or just a good view of the town.
