About Estação Ferroviária de Matilde

The Estação Ferroviária de Matilde (railroad station) is in the district of Matilde, in Alfredo Chaves, in the Espírito Santo mountains. It opened in 1910 on the line linking Vitória to Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, built by the Estrada de Ferro Sul do Espírito Santo and later taken over by the Leopoldina Railway.

The region's coffee, tied to Italian immigration, passed through it on its way to the port of Vitória. For decades the station was the district's main gateway, and the village's shops and services grew up around it.

Today the building is a cultural and memorial space, with photos telling the story of the railroad and immigration. Around it you can still see the iron water tank on a stone base, the bridge over the Rio Benevente and the remains of the locomotive turntable.

The visit is easygoing and pairs well with Matilde's nature outings: the Cachoeira de Matilde is nearby, and the walk along the tracks to the Túnel Encantado starts at the station. The building and the platform are on flat ground, easy to reach.
