About Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião

The Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião (main church) is the principal Catholic church of Afonso Cláudio, in the mountain region of Espírito Santo. It is downtown, facing a tree-lined square, and is dedicated to São Sebastião, the town's patron saint.

The story begins with a chapel opened in 1887 on the same site. In 1899, the first bishop of Espírito Santo, Dom João Batista Nery, created the parish of São Sebastião do Alto Guandu. The current church was built between 1945 and 1949 through the efforts of the faithful and inaugurated in 1949.

The central clock tower dominates the view from the square. Inside, the church has religious paintings and stained glass, worth a few quiet minutes.

It is the church for the town's big celebrations, especially the patron saint's festival in January. The visit is short and easy, and goes well with a walk around downtown.
