About Igreja Matriz Senhor Bom Jesus dos Aflitos
The Igreja Matriz Senhor Bom Jesus dos Aflitos (main church) is the main historic landmark of downtown Porto Belo, on the northern coast of Santa Catarina. It is named after the town's patron saint, who also gave his name to the old village.
The church's history goes back to 1814, when the village was formed by Azorean settlers. The architecture follows the Portuguese-Brazilian style of the Santa Catarina coast, with a simple facade and a bell tower to one side. In 1998, the church was listed by the State, through the Fundação Catarinense de Cultura, along with other historic churches on the coast.
The visit is quick: you can look at the facade, the lawn and the surrounding trees and, if the church is open, the interior.
The church is still used by the parish. If you want to see the interior, go during Mass or check opening times with the parish, always respecting the services.
