About Praia da Armação do Itapocorói
Praia da Armação do Itapocorói (beach) is in the historic center of Penha, on the northern coast of Santa Catarina. Sheltered by a bay, it has clean, calm water and is one of the most popular beaches in town.
The name comes from the whaling station (armação) set up in the area in the 18th century, in 1777, when whaling drove the economy of the Santa Catarina coast. Near the beach is the São João Batista church, one of the oldest in the state, tied to that past.
The scenery is defined by the fishing boats anchored in the bay and by the pier, which juts out over the sea and is the best-known spot on the waterfront. You often see small-scale fishing activity and boats coming and going.
The calm sea suits families with children and anyone who does not like waves. At low tide, the beach widens and rocky patches appear near the water.
