Get to know Denizli

Denizli lies in southwest Turkey, on the corridor between the Aegean coast and the interior of Anatolia. The capital is an industrial city, known for cotton fabrics and towels; what draws visitors is about 20 km to the north, in the town of Pamukkale.

Pamukkale, “cotton castle” in Turkish, is a slope covered with travertine, a white rock formed by hot, carbonate-rich water flowing for thousands of years. The terraces are walked barefoot. Above them are the ruins of Hierapolis, a Greco-Roman spa city with a theater, necropolis, the Frontinus Gate and the Martyrdom of Saint Philip; the archaeological museum occupies the old baths. Pamukkale and Hierapolis together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Laodicea, between the capital and Pamukkale, is mentioned in the Apocalypse as one of the seven churches of Asia; excavations have uncovered colonnaded streets, theaters and churches. In Karahayıt, near Pamukkale, a hot spring rich in iron leaves the stones reddish.

The Denizli rooster, known for its long crow, is the city's symbol, and Buldan, in the mountains, keeps hand-weaving alive. Staying overnight in Pamukkale lets you see the terraces early in the morning and at sunset, when there are fewer people. Aphrodisias, in the neighboring province of Aydın, is often visited from here.

When to go

April to June and September to October usually have pleasant temperatures for walking the terraces and Hierapolis. July and August are hot, and the white travertine reflects the sun: wear a hat and sunscreen. In winter there is less activity, and the warm terrace waters contrast with the cold air.

Getting there

Denizli Çardak Airport (DNZ) is about 65 km from the capital and handles domestic flights, mainly from Istanbul. There are regional trains from Izmir to Denizli and buses from Antalya, Izmir, Selçuk and Istanbul. Minibuses to Pamukkale depart from Denizli's bus terminal.

Your questions

Frequently asked questions about Denizli

Do you have to take off your shoes on the Pamukkale terraces?

Yes. To protect the travertine, walking the terraces is done barefoot. The surface is rough in some places and slippery in others; bring a bag to store your shoes.

How many days should you allow for Pamukkale and Hierapolis?

A full day allows you to see the terraces, Hierapolis and the museum without rushing. With one night in Pamukkale you can include Laodicea or Aphrodisias in the neighboring province of Aydın.

Is Pamukkale doable as a day trip from Antalya or from Kuşadası?

Yes — many agencies sell that tour — but it's several hours of driving each way. Those who stay overnight in Pamukkale make better use of the early morning and late afternoon.

Is the ancient pool of Hierapolis included in the entrance fee?

No. The ancient pool, with fallen columns beneath the warm water, is charged separately. Bring swimwear and check the current price at the entrance.

Is Laodicea worth a visit?

For those interested in archaeology or the history of Christianity, yes. The city is mentioned in the Apocalypse and has colonnaded streets and theaters. It lies between the capital and Pamukkale and takes one to two hours.
