About Heritage Museum

The Musée Héritage originated from the collection of Roland Châtel, a collector who assembled objects from life in the archipelago and opened the museum in 2003. It is housed in a 19th-century green mansion on rue Maître Georges Lefèvre, near General de Gaulle Square, and is privately run.

About ten rooms organize the collection by themes: medicine, education, religious life, fishing, with the doris, the boat that marked the archipelago’s artisanal fishing, and Prohibition, when the port of Saint-Pierre received spirits that were then smuggled to the United States. The pieces show the islands’ social, economic and religious life in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The museum complements L'Arche: while the community museum tells the islands’ general history, Héritage shows the everyday life of those who lived there, with objects preserved by families.
