What the guide covers
The Saint-Pierre and Miquelon guide is being prepared in two destinations, one for each part of the archipelago. The first is the town of Saint-Pierre, with the harbor, the museums, the Anse à Henry trail and Île aux Marins. The second is Miquelon and Langlade, with the village of Miquelon, the Grand Barachois lagoon, the Langlade isthmus and Cap de Miquelon.
Each destination brings together the places in the region, what to do in each one, attractions with their own pages, when to go and how to get there. Destinations appear on the country page as they are published: while a destination is being prepared, it does not appear in the list.
Communes and groups
Saint-Pierre and Miquelon is an overseas collectivity of France and is divided into two communes: Saint-Pierre, which includes Île aux Marins and Grand Colombier, and Miquelon-Langlade. The guide uses the two communes as divisions and places each in a group: Island of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon and Langlade.
Place names appear as they are used on the islands, in French, such as Île aux Marins, Grand Barachois and Cap de Miquelon. When helpful, the text explains what the name indicates, like the Grand Barachois lagoon and the sandbar of the Langlade isthmus.
How to travel around Saint-Pierre and Miquelon
You reach the archipelago by plane, from St. John's, Halifax and Montreal in Canada, and from Paris only in summer, or by ferry from Fortune, Newfoundland. Ferries connect Saint-Pierre to Miquelon and, in season, to Langlade, and there are short flights to Miquelon; a boat takes about 10 minutes to reach Île aux Marins. Drive on the right, following France’s traffic rules.
The time zone is UTC−3, and UTC−2 from March to November. The climate is cold and humid: summer, from July to September, has highs near 17 to 19 °C and frequent fog, and winter, from December to March, brings snow, wind and highs near 0 °C.
History and nature
The islands were a support base for European cod fishermen from the 16th century and changed hands between France and the United Kingdom several times until 1816. The inhabitants descend mainly from Basques, Bretons and Normans and from Acadians who came from what is now Canada. During US Prohibition, Saint-Pierre was a hub for beverages. On Miquelon and Langlade, the Grand Barachois lagoon hosts seal colonies, and Grand Colombier Island, near Saint-Pierre, is a seabird reserve.
Why there are no prices
In Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, the guide does not show tour or ticket prices because they change frequently. When there is a guided visit, reservation or scheduled time, such as the boat to Île aux Marins, the museums and the boat trips on the Grand Barachois, the text warns of this, and the price should be checked before you go.
How the content is made
The information for each place is researched from official sources, such as Saint-Pierre and Miquelon tourism and the collectivity, the town halls, Météo-France and the museums, and checked before publication.
The pictures in this guide are illustrations based on the real place, not photographs, and may differ from it. Photos sent by travelers appear separately, as travelers' photos.
If you find any information that differs, write to us: fixing it is quicker than it seems.
