About Les Salines

Les Salines are the wooden sheds lined up at the water’s edge, a few meters from the Pointe aux Canons on Boulevard Constant Colmay. The name comes from salt: they were the storerooms where salt, salted fish and fishing gear were kept. Built by the archipelago’s government for artisanal fishermen, they are still used to store nets, buoys and boats, and are painted in bright colors like the town’s houses.

The sheds are part of the small-scale fishing landscape that sustained the islands for centuries: fishermen used to set out in dories, flat-bottomed boats that could be hauled ashore, and cod was salted and dried on the graves, pebble areas at the shoreline. They remain occupied by fishermen, sailors and local associations.

At Saline number 16, the Les Zigotos association displays objects and documents about artisanal fishing and welcomes visitors in season, sometimes in period costume. It is also from there that dory trips along the shore depart.
