About Cathedral of Saint-Pierre

Saint-Pierre Cathedral stands on the site of the city’s first church from 1690. The previous wooden building was destroyed by a fire in 1902, and the new church was built between 1905 and 1907. The bell tower was rebuilt in 1975 using stones from Alsace and riolite, the volcanic rock of the island itself.

Inside, the church follows the model of Basque churches, the homeland of many island families: there is an upper gallery level with stepped wooden benches above the nave, from which the altar can be seen from above.

The church served as the seat of the apostolic vicariate of the islands until 2018, when the archipelago became part of the Diocese of La Rochelle and Saintes in France; it remains open for worship. It was classified as a historic monument in 2020. It is a few steps from General de Gaulle square and the harbor.
