About Notre-Dame-des-Ardilliers Church
The church Notre-Dame-des-Ardilliers was built between 1862 and 1865 to replace Miquelon’s first church, which was in poor condition, and was inaugurated on November 1, 1865. It is the oldest in the archipelago. The name honors Father Ardilliers and his sister, a nun of Notre-Dame des Ardilliers in Saumur, France, who likely helped pay for the island’s first church.
In the same year as its inauguration, Emperor Napoleon III donated a copy of Murillo’s Assumption to the church; it stands at the back of the choir. Around 1900–1905, the ceiling was divided into three vaulted naves. The stained glass windows are more recent, from the 1980s and 1990s.
The church belongs to the commune of Miquelon-Langlade and was classified as a historic monument in 2011. It remains the village parish church and is located on Place des Ardilliers, next to the Maison de la Nature.
