About Pearl Harbor National Memorial (USS Arizona Memorial)
On the morning of December 7, 1941, aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked the U.S. Pacific Fleet anchored at Pearl Harbor. More than 2,400 Americans died, and the United States entered World War II the following day. The battleship USS Arizona exploded and sank within minutes, with 1,177 crew members killed.
The visitor center on the bay has two museums: one about the road to war and another about the attack, with objects, photos and survivor accounts. From there the USS Arizona Memorial program departs: a film followed by a Navy boat to the memorial, a white 56-meter structure opened in 1962 over the hull, where the names of the dead are listed. Over a thousand sailors remain inside the ship, and droplets of oil still surface.
In the same area are other independently operated museums with separate admission: the submarine USS Bowfin, next to the visitor center, and on Ford Island the battleship USS Missouri, where Japan’s surrender was signed in 1945, and an aviation museum.
Admission to the National Park Service visitor center and museums is free. The Arizona program has limited spaces and requires online reservations with a small service fee; there is also a day-of waiting list.
