About Anchorage Museum

The Anchorage Museum opened in 1968 in a small building and was expanded several times until it occupied an entire downtown block, with a mirrored glass façade. It’s the state’s largest museum and focuses on Alaska and the circumpolar North: history, culture, art and science.

The Alaska history gallery covers more than 10,000 years, from the first inhabitants to the Russian period, the U.S. purchase in 1867, the gold rushes, World War II, the 1964 earthquake and the oil era. Objects include boats, clothing, tools and reconstructed environments.

The Smithsonian Arctic Studies Center displays around 600 pieces from Alaska Native peoples loaned by the Smithsonian museums, such as fur clothing, masks, hats and utensils, organized by region and accompanied by testimonies from members of the originating communities.

The art galleries bring together painters who depicted Alaska and contemporary Arctic artists. The Discovery Center, with hands-on science exhibits, is aimed at families.
