Kahramanmaraş lies where the Mediterranean meets southeastern Anatolia, at the foot of the Ahır Mountains. The city is nationally known for Maraş ice cream, made with goat’s milk and salep, a flour from the root of wild orchids that gives the elastic texture; the ice cream makers beat it with long metal paddles.
Germanicia, the Roman city that existed beneath the Dulkadiroğlu neighborhoods, was discovered in 2007. areas of mosaics with hunting scenes, banquets and daily life lie under protective covers, with walkways.
In the centre, the castle sits on the hill above the town, and to its south is the Ulu Camii, showing Mamluk and Seljuk influences. In Afşin, to the north, the Eshab-ı Kehf complex combines a mosque and a cave linked to the story of the Seven Sleepers, told in Christianity and Islam.
The cuisine uses Maraş pepper, red and coarsely ground, tarhana, a dried dough of yogurt and vegetables, and the soup tirşik. In winter, the Yedikuyular resort in the mountains above the town receives skiers.
When to go
April, May, September and October usually have mild weather. Summer is hot, the most popular time for ice cream. Winter brings snow to the mountains and to the Yedikuyular resort.
