How many days
Two days: one for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and another for the Taranaki waterfall and Ruapehu gondola. In winter, as many days as you want for skiing.
When to go
From December to April for the trails and the crossing. From late June to October for skiing. In any month the weather can change quickly and nights are cold because of the altitude.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
Note: the village is isolated and public transport only reaches National Park. Vans are used for the alpine crossing; there are buses to the ski area during the season.
