About Uummannaq Church
Uummannaq’s church was built in 1935 with blocks cut from the very slope on which it stands, by the port. It is one of the few stone churches in the country, where almost all others are wooden.
The thick walls, made of gray and reddish stone, match the rock of the mountain rising just behind. The interior is simple, with wooden pews and the altar facing the nave.
Next to the church are the museum, the old turf houses and the oldest part of town around the port.
The church is used by locals for services and appears in many photos of the town, with the heart-shaped mountain in the background.
