About Point 660 Ice Sheet

Point 660 is the name given to the place where the dirt road from Kangerlussuaq meets the edge of Greenland’s ice cap. The number refers to the point’s approximate altitude in meters. It is one of the few places in the country where you can reach the ice cap by land, without plane or helicopter.

The road, built in the late 1990s, crosses roughly 35 km of tundra, valleys and moraines. At the end, after a short climb over loose rock, the ice begins: a white undulating surface stretching east to the horizon.

Tours use adapted vehicles, with guides who know the terrain and lead groups on a short walk on the ice cap, using crampons when necessary. In summer, small meltwater streams run across the surface and disappear into holes in the ice.

Some tours include an overnight camp at the ice edge, and the Arctic Circle Trail can start here instead of in the settlement.
