About Kangerlussuaq Museum

Kangerlussuaq began as a United States air base during World War II, named Bluie West Eight and later Sondrestrom. The American military left in 1992, and the base became a civilian settlement and airport.

The museum, affiliated with the Sisimiut museum, is housed in a building from the old military complex, in front of the airport. The rooms display photographs, uniforms, equipment and everyday objects from the base, as well as maps of expeditions and ice research that started there.

One section explains how the airport became, for decades, Greenland’s main international gateway, and how the military buildings were converted into hotels, schools and homes.

The visit is short and pairs well with waiting for a flight or the end of a trip to the glacier.
