The festival

What is Gramado Film Festival

The Gramado Film Festival has been held since 1973. Every August, in the middle of winter in the Serra Gaúcha, the town hosts directors, actors, critics and the public for competitive screenings of feature films and short films from Brazil and other Portuguese‑ and Spanish‑speaking countries, as well as programs dedicated to local (gaúcha) production and to students.

The main screenings take place at the Palácio dos Festivais, the old cinema on the main avenue, whose façade features the Kikito statue—the trophy awarded to the winners. At the end of the festival, an awards night hands out the Kikitos in several categories, and there are tributes to notable names in Brazilian cinema.

Every night the red carpet is rolled out on Rua Coberta, the glass‑covered pedestrian street in the center, up to the entrance of the Palácio. Locals and tourists gather there to watch film crews and honorees arrive; they leave their handprints on the city’s walk of fame. During the day there are Q&As with film teams, repeat screenings and other activities.

The festival fits with Gramado’s winter season: fireplaces, fondue, chocolates and drives through the hills. For film lovers, it’s a chance to see new Brazilian films before they reach theaters and to take part in discussions with the people who made them.
