The festival

What is Campos do Jordão Winter Festival

Created in 1970 by the government of the state of São Paulo, the Campos do Jordão Winter Festival is one of the most traditional classical music festivals in Latin America. Produced by the state government and the Fundação Osesp, it takes place in July, the height of winter in the Mantiqueira Range, when the town—over 1,600 meters above sea level—receives its largest influx of visitors.

The festival combines concerts and education. Symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, choirs and soloists from Brazil and other countries perform throughout the month, and hundreds of young scholarship recipients take part in lessons, rehearsals and recitals with invited teachers and conductors. At the end, the scholarship students form orchestras that perform in the final concerts, and some receive awards.

The main hall is the Claudio Santoro Auditorium, located high in town inside Parque Felícia Leirner, which also houses the artist’s outdoor sculpture museum among araucárias. There are also outdoor concerts in Parque Capivari, near Vila Capivari, and performances in the chapel of Palácio Boa Vista and in city churches. Part of the program also takes place in the state capital, at Sala São Paulo.

A visit to the festival can be combined with the rest of Campos do Jordão’s winter season: Mantiqueira excursions, Horto Florestal, the tourist village of Capivari and mountain cuisine, with fondue and hot chocolate. The concerts give the town’s winter its own cultural program.

What not to miss

A symphony concert at the Claudio Santoro Auditorium. Outdoor performances in Parque Capivari. The closing concerts with the scholarship orchestras.

How to enjoy it

Check the program on the official website and book tickets for the auditorium concerts, which often sell out. Some concerts have free admission but may require advance ticket pick-up. July nights in the mountains are cold, with temperatures that can approach zero: bring a coat, hat and gloves. Staying near Capivari makes getting around easier; the auditorium is high in town and the most practical way to reach it is by car or taxi.

Plan ahead

July is Campos do Jordão’s high season, with school holidays and high demand. Reserve accommodation well in advance; weekends are the busiest.
