About Kansas Aviation Museum
The Kansas Aviation Museum occupies the old terminal of Wichita’s municipal airport, an art-deco building from 1935 constructed as part of a federal works program. Between the 1930s and 1950s the terminal welcomed aviators and passengers from across the country, and Amelia Earhart, who was born in Kansas, passed through there. The airport was relocated and the building stood empty until the museum opened in 1991.
Exhibits explain how Wichita became the air capital, featuring the companies that settled in the city from the 1920s and the aircraft built there, from small touring planes to executive jets and bombers. On the adjacent ramp there are larger aircraft, some open to visitors on special days.
The museum houses the Kansas Aviation Hall of Fame, honoring pilots, engineers and entrepreneurs, and rooms that recreate the 1930s terminal. It is closed some days of the week; check before you go.
