About Strataca
Strataca is Kansas’s salt museum, installed in part of a rock salt mine still operating beneath Hutchinson. The deposit formed about 275 million years ago when a shallow sea in the region evaporated. The visit begins with a descent in a mine elevator to roughly 200 meters down.
Below ground, galleries carved in the salt explain the deposit’s geology, the machinery and miners’ lives. A train ride travels through former working faces where tools and miners’ remnants remain, and an electric cart takes visitors to darker areas of the mine. The thermometer down there reads about 20 °C in every season.
The company that works the mine uses some tunnels as secure storage, and the museum displays a selection of film costumes and objects kept there. Tickets are sold for specific descent times, and the elevator and train are not accessible to all visitors; check access conditions before you go.
