About Chase County Courthouse

The Chase County courthouse was built in 1873 from limestone quarried in the nearby hills, in the Second French Empire style, with a mansard roof and a small tower. It stands at the end of Broadway, Cottonwood Falls’ main street, and is the oldest courthouse in Kansas still used for its original purpose.

The building houses a three-story wooden spiral staircase, courtrooms with period furnishings and a tower view over the Cottonwood River valley. Guided tours, led by volunteers, tell the story of the county, cattle ranching and the town.

The brick street leading to the courthouse has shops, Flint Hills art galleries and a stone bridge over the river. Visits to the building are usually on weekdays and at some weekend times; check before you go.
