About Pikes Peak State Park
Pikes Peak State Park sits atop a bluff south of McGregor, about 150 meters above the Mississippi River. It is named for explorer Zebulon Pike, who passed the area in 1805 and suggested building a fort there; the better-known peak with his name is in Colorado.
The main overlook, with wooden boardwalks, looks out over the confluence of the Mississippi and Wisconsin rivers and the islands in the valley. It was along these waterways that Marquette and Jolliet reached the Mississippi in 1673. Surrounding the overlook are woodland trails with sandstone formations.
One trail descends to Bridal Veil waterfall, small, which flows more in spring and after rain. The park has camping and picnic areas and is one of the most visited spots in autumn, when the woods change color.
