The city

What to expect from Amana.

The largest of the seven Amana Colonies villages, founded by German pietist immigrants who shared work, housing and food until 1932. It’s about 30 km from Cedar Rapids. The streets feature brick and sandstone houses, artisan workshops, bakeries and German restaurants. The Amana Heritage Museum tells the community’s story, and Middle Amana has the last preserved communal kitchen.
