About Lake Red Rock
Red Rock Lake is the largest lake in Iowa. It was formed in the 1960s by the Red Rock Dam, built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the Des Moines River to control flooding. The name comes from the reddish sandstone cliffs on its shores.
The dam and visitor center are about 8 km from Pella. Around the lake there are parks with beaches, picnic areas, boat ramps and trails, such as the paved section of the Volksweg Trail that connects Pella to the lake. Cordova Park has an observation tower, an adapted old water tank, with wide views over the water.
The lake is a stopover for migratory birds, and in winter it often hosts white pelicans and bald eagles. Water levels vary greatly with rainfall, and some beaches may close during high water.
