About Thorncrown Chapel
Thorncrown Chapel was commissioned by a retired professor, Jim Reed, who wanted a place of reflection for travelers on the road through the woods west of Eureka Springs. The design is by E. Fay Jones, an Arkansas architect who worked with Frank Lloyd Wright.
Opened in 1980, the chapel is about 15 meters tall and has 425 windows. The structure is made of lightweight pine timbers crossed in a lattice that could be carried by two people along the trail without heavy machinery. Glass walls bring the forest into view, and the light changes throughout the day.
Jones was inspired by the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris to create what he called Ozark Gothic. The chapel won awards from the American Institute of Architects and is often cited among the most important buildings of the 20th century in the United States.
The chapel does not belong to any specific church, it holds services on Sundays and many weddings.
