About Eureka Springs Historic District
Eureka Springs began in 1879, when the reputed healing waters of the springs drew thousands to a valley in the Ozark Mountains. In a few years the town filled with hotels, Victorian houses and bathhouses built as the steep hillside allowed.
The result is a center of curving streets that overlap, limestone buildings with iron and wood facades, porches and stairways linking one level to the next. Spring Street and Main Street concentrate art galleries, craft shops, cafés and restaurants. The entire historic district is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Several springs, such as Basin Spring in the center, were enclosed by small stone parks. A tourist trolley runs through the downtown and the higher neighborhoods, where houses are painted in strong colors.
The town has an artistic tradition and hosts festivals throughout the year.
