About Tombs of the Nobles

The Tombs of the Nobles lie on the Qubbet el-Hawa hill on the west bank, opposite Aswan center. They were cut into the rock for the region's rulers and officials, who commanded the southern border and expeditions to Nubia in the Old and Middle Kingdoms.

Some tombs have paintings and inscriptions that recount those journeys, such as Harkhuf’s, who brought a pygmy dancer to the pharaoh, and the tombs of Sarenput I and II, with preserved pillars and colors.

A staircase rises from the riverbank up to the tombs, and from the top of the hill you can see the Nile, the islands and the town.

The tombs are visited with a flashlight in some sections, and a guard opens the closed chambers; bring small notes for tips.
