About Kitchener's Island
Plantation Island lies on the Nile between Elephantine Island and Aswan's west bank. At the end of the 19th century it was given to British General Horatio Kitchener, who turned it into a garden with plants brought from India, Southeast Asia and Africa.
Today Aswan's botanical garden has palm trees, fig trees, flowering trees and shaded avenues surrounded by water. Herons and other birds often perch on the banks.
The island is a common stop on felucca trips and a shady break in the middle of the day.
The garden paths are flat and shaded, and there are signs with the species’ names. The island has a small waterside café.
From the island's bank you can see feluccas passing between the granite rocks and the dunes of the west bank.
