About Aswan High Dam
The High Dam (Sadd el-Aali) lies about 13 km south of Aswan. Built in the 1960s and finished in 1970, it controls the Nile’s floods, generates electricity and created Lake Nasser, which stretches for hundreds of kilometers into Sudan.
From the road across the dam you can see, on one side, the lake and, on the other, the Nile flowing toward Aswan. A lotus-shaped monument commemorates the cooperation with the Soviet Union on the project.
The works prompted UNESCO’s campaign to save the Nubian temples, such as Philae and Abu Simbel, which would have been submerged.
Cruises on Lake Nasser, bound for Abu Simbel, depart from a port just south of the dam, and from the viewpoint you can see the expanse of water stretching into the desert.
