The parish
Get to know Paget
Paget faces the city of Hamilton across the harbour and extends to the south coast. The name recalls William Paget, Baron Paget, one of the shareholders of the company that colonized the island. It is a parish of colourful houses and gardens, with small ferry slips on the harbour side and pink-sand beaches on the ocean side.
The Bermuda Botanical Gardens occupies a large area in the middle of the parish, with greenhouses, a native plant garden, fruit trees and a sensory garden. Within it is Masterworks, Bermuda’s art museum, with works by local artists and by foreign painters who portrayed the island. Camden, the official residence of the prime minister, is on the same grounds.
On the south coast, Elbow Beach is a long light-sand beach protected by reefs, with public access. Bermuda’s pink sand comes from fragments of small red reef organisms mixed with the sand.
Paget Marsh is a mangrove and freshwater swamp reserve, with a wooden boardwalk that shows what the island’s vegetation looked like before colonization. On the harbour side, the Salt Kettle, Hodson’s and Lower Ferry slips serve the pink-line ferry, which reaches Hamilton in a few minutes.

Your questions
Frequently asked questions about Paget
How do I get to the Bermuda Botanical Gardens?
The Botanical Gardens are in Paget, on South Road, a few minutes from the city of Hamilton. Buses leaving the central Hamilton terminal along South Road stop at the entrance. By taxi, scooter or electric minicar the ride is short. Allow a few hours for the gardens and the Masterworks museum.
Is Elbow Beach public?
Yes. Bermuda’s beaches have public access, and Elbow Beach has entrances along Paget’s south coast. Part of the sand strip is in front of a hotel, but the beach remains open to everyone. The reef off the beach makes the sea calmer on many days.
What is the Masterworks museum?
It is Bermuda’s art museum, located in the Paget Botanical Gardens. The collection includes works by Bermudian artists and by foreign painters who depicted the island, plus temporary exhibitions. Check days and opening hours before you go.
Why is Bermuda’s sand pink?
Because of fragments of a small red marine organism that lives on the reef, a foraminifer. When it dies, its shell breaks and mixes with the limestone sand and shells, giving the pinkish tone seen at Elbow Beach and other south-coast beaches.
Is Paget a good area to stay in?
It’s one of the most convenient: a few minutes from Hamilton by ferry or bus and it has a beach on the south coast. There are hotels, guesthouses and apartments throughout the parish. For those who want to walk to the centre, the harbour side is the most convenient area.
