The festival

What is Procession of the Holy Blood

The relic of the Holy Blood has been in Bruges since the early 13th century and is kept in the Heilig-Bloedbasiliek, the two-storey basilica on Burg Square. The procession in its honour is documented from 1304 and is held every year on Ascension Day. Many locals still call it the most beautiful day in Bruges. Since 2009 it has been on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage.

The procession is divided into sections. The first ones recount stories from the Old and New Testaments, from the Nativity in Bethlehem to Pentecost, with participants in period costume, floats, choirs, musicians, dancers and animals. Another section reenacts the legend that Thierry of Alsace, Count of Flanders, brought the relic from Jerusalem. At the end, members of the Noble Brotherhood of the Holy Blood accompany the reliquary carried through the streets.

The procession begins in the early afternoon near the Dijver and follows the streets of the historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site, moving in silence and reverence when the reliquary passes. At the end there is a closing ceremony on Burg Square, followed by veneration of the relic in the basilica. The organisers revise some scenes each year to keep the tradition alive.

For the traveller, it is an opportunity to see Bruges staged with a tradition that mixes faith, history and street theatre, with thousands of participants from the city and surrounding area.
