The province
Get to know Çankırı
Çankırı lies north of Ankara, at the transition between the central plateau and the Black Sea mountains. The provincial capital is a small town, with the 16th‑century Ulu Camii attributed to architect Mimar Sinan, and old wooden houses in the centre.
Near the capital, the Çankırı salt mine (Tuz Mağarası) has been exploited for centuries. Visitible galleries feature sculptures carved from the salt itself, lighting and a stable temperature year‑round.
To the north, on the border with Kastamonu, Ilgaz Mountain National Park has pine and fir forests, trails and a ski resort. The road between Ankara and Kastamonu crosses the mountain and continues to the Black Sea coast.
Çankırı is known for the yaran sohbetleri, traditional male gatherings with conversation, music, poetry and playful performances that follow old rules. It is a local tradition presented at events and festivals.
When to go
May to October is usually the best time for Ilgaz trails and for the provincial capital. The ski season generally runs from December to March, depending on snowfall. The salt mine has the same temperature in any season.
Getting there
The nearest airport is Esenboğa (ESB) in Ankara. Travelers from Brazil usually fly into Istanbul and connect to Ankara; confirm connections before booking. There are buses from Ankara to Çankırı throughout the day, and the road continues on to Kastamonu and the Black Sea coast. For the salt mine and Ilgaz, a car is more convenient.
