The province
Get to know Bingöl
Bingöl is a province of mountains and plateaus between Elazığ, Muş and Erzurum. The name means 'thousand lakes' in Turkish and recalls the small highland lakes scattered across the ranges. In summer the plateaus host herds and beekeepers, and Bingöl honey is sold throughout the country.
The best-known attraction is the floating islands (Yüzen Adalar), on a lake near Solhan, protected as a natural monument. The islands are made of intertwined reeds and roots, some with trees growing on top, and they slowly change position with the wind. A boardwalk and resting areas are on the shore.
The islands change appearance with the seasons: green in late spring and summer, yellowish in autumn and snow-covered in winter. The lake lies beside the D-300 road, which links Bingöl to Muş, so it is often a stop for travellers between the Euphrates valley and Lake Van.
In winter, the Hesarek ski resort, near the provincial capital, welcomes skiers from the region. Mountain cuisine features herb cheese (otlu peynir), honey and lamb.
When to go
May to October is usually the best time for the floating islands, with green vegetation from June to August. In winter the islands are snow-covered, but mountain roads can become difficult. For skiing in Hesarek, the season typically runs from late December to March.
Getting there
Bingöl Airport (BGG) handles domestic flights. The floating islands are near Solhan, east of the provincial capital, beside the road to Muş; bus passengers get off at Solhan and continue by taxi. Elazığ and Muş airports, with more flights, are a few hours' drive away.
Your questions
Frequently asked questions about Bingöl

One or two hours are enough for the boardwalk and the shore. Many visitors stop at the islands en route between Bingöl and Muş.

Yes, by road, in a day. From Muş the route is shorter; from Elazığ the trip passes through Bingöl city.
When is the Hesarek ski resort open?
The season typically runs from late December to March, depending on each year's snowfall. Check piste openings before you go.
