About Taranaki Falls
The Taranaki waterfall is on the Wairere stream, southeast of the village of Whakapapa, inside Tongariro National Park. The water drops about 20 meters over the edge of a lava flow that came down from Mount Ruapehu around 15,000 years ago and formed a dark rock ledge.
Access is via a loop of about 6 km that starts at the village center. The outbound path, at higher elevation, crosses open shrub and grass fields with views of Ruapehu and the Ngāuruhoe cone. The return route descends along the stream bank through beech forest, past small cascades and the waterfall itself, viewed from below.
The trail is well marked, with boardwalks and steps, and is one of the most popular walks for those not doing the alpine crossing. In winter, the upper section can have snow.
From the same loop a side track leads to the Tama Lakes, between Ruapehu and Ngāuruhoe, for a longer walk.

How to get there
On foot from Whakapapa village center: the trail starts near the park visitor center on the village main road. There is parking in the village.
