About Onetangi Beach

Onetangi is on the north coast of Waiheke Island, about 10 km from the Matiatia wharf. The beach has nearly 2 km of light sand, facing the Hauraki Gulf, and is the island’s longest. In good weather you can see other islands of the gulf on the horizon.

Because it is more exposed, it receives small waves, good for swimming and playing in the water, and has a wide area for walking at low tide. Along the shoreline there are beach houses and some restaurants and bars with tables overlooking the sea.

Behind the beach, the Onetangi valley concentrates some of the island’s vineyards and olive groves, which offer tours with tastings. Many are a few kilometers from the sand, and organized tours connect the properties.

Early in the year, the beach usually hosts horse races on the sand, a traditional island event; dates change each season.
